"Hamburgs ascent to a city of trade mastery began at the end of the twelfth century. The River Elbe played a key role. On May 7th, 1189 the council of the city decided to transfer the port from the location of the small River Alster to the River Elbe. The Hanseatic League, to which the city of Hamburg already belonged, expected from the new port not only an increase of trading but also a higher standard of security – at this time the pirates still made trouble in the area of the Upper Elbe.
The construction of the new port and the formation of the district “New-Town” as a merchant colony, the commercial route between Hamburg and the North Sea was supposed to be protected against “Beachrobbery and Piracy”. Each year on the date of May 7th Hamburg celebrates his “Port-Birthday”." *
